A brief introduction to the songs on my 2020 album “The Woken Spirit” which is out on all major Streaming and download platforms and Bandcamp (pay what you like or free!) on 31st January 2020.
Twaddle – A bluesy rock n roller kicks off the album drenched in 60s organ and brass. The song tells the story of someone who is more in love with words than the world around them and who gets vilified and beaten up when they go around town spouting off random obscure words with glorious thrill and abandonment!
Apples – Calming down somewhat after Twaddle comes the very gentle (in parts) acoustic singalong Apples. The chorus will drive you nuts and will inhabit your brain; it’s complemented in the verses with a much heavier sound and a lyric all about questioning yourself and your life’s goals.
What’s Up – Back we go to the rockers with this Wah Wah led pop - rocker, which contains one of the favourite lyric and vocals that I’ve ever done. Where else have you heard “Ronnie Corbett” mixed in with “Jam Roly Poly” with a Beatlesque Musical bridge interlude to reset the mood!
The Sentinel – Moody acoustic and hypnotic drum song all about a much more approachable Grim Reaper! Musically inspired by the old Cowboy and Indian films and TV shows which I loved as a kid.
Gubbins & the Pillion – Pink Floyd
fans will enjoy the intro to this one, which is a shameless nod to their late 60s oeuvre! The lyric is deadly serious and sincere though all about the hell of living with anxiety and searching for an escape route back to a reasonably happier existence. In this song finally being achieved with the help of “Gubbins & the Pillion”, one of the random phrases that came to me one day whilst serving kippers! (End of Side 1 on an imaginary vinyl version J)
Sea of Science - (Side two) kick off with a relaxing and spacey instrumental. One of the first things that I wrote on the Piano I bought in early 2019. This lulls the listener into a calming dreamlike state before the album again changes tack completely with…
Dimensions - Moody synths and Morricone guitar lead this curious hybrid of a song, half gobbledegook, half earnest rant! I say rant it’s an attempt at a rap which I really canna do
!
I’m Not Finished Yet – Comedy rocker, in which the singer is quite clearly “losing it”! A situation which ends with probably the funniest ending ever on a Mrcorbett song! I had so much fun recording and writing this song, the lyric will hopefully make you chuckle although 48% of you will not like one line I’m sure!
Siren Voices - Quirky stop start synth pop song with once more a serious message in the lyrics. Inspired by climate Greta, and others who rose up against the establishment and the media in 2019. I paint a picture that not enough of us are willing to join in unless it directly affects us, leading to these rebellions soon being brushed under the carpet of history, maybe this time it will be different though?
Silence – One of my oldest songs, written and first recorded when I was 13 (which given the dark subject matter is pretty scary for me now!) now given the “Killing Eve” works, I love the music in that show, more than the show itself in season 2 truth be told, so set out to make my version of one. Really happy with how this turned out, I absolutely scared the neighbours I’m sure when I screamed out the vocal in the last verse, always good fun!
Sign on the Line – Another piano written song, which I altered to synth and heavy guitars when recording to give it a bit more oomph. The lyric is my observation on how life is now, with the coming of the snowflakes and the control of our lives by massive corporations and social media, all cheery stuff! Once again I’m very proud of the lyric; one of my finest, there is life in this old dog still :)
The Little Voice Inside My Head – The album comes back into the light to close with this sweet acoustic paean to our inner host, the wondrous mind! I’m a firm believer that “Tomorrow will be a better day” despite what today and the past can throw at you. There is a brief bit of angst thrown in this tune too, but mainly it’s a peaceful and positive end to the album.
I hope you will have a listen sometime to it and leave comments below on your opinion and thoughts good or bad. I have great fun putting these songs together and feel very fortunate to be able to do so; I hope my love of making music comes across in the final result. Thanks for reading this (is you get this far!) Mrcorbett
