The 2020 52 Song Challenge by Mrcorbett

Once upon a while ago I used to love posting up my creative efforts on YouTube, posting up new songs to see if anyone liked them, or some of my more unusual covers which I knew from playing live people would enjoy. Recent years have been tough though, my confidence and motivation severely diminished by anxiety which has virtually ended my social life at time of writing.

As 2020 approached I thought it was about time that I started to fight back and thus came up with the idea of doing a song video a week, playing not only long lost originals but new songs too. When I was an active live musician, I hated to repeat myself and so would often play a different set everytime. This obviously made me quite ropey and unpolished compared to other regular performers who would only play their best songs, but I liked it that way! I would frequently go wrong as i never could use a book to play from, (far too distracting!) So I thought to regain some of this old love of 'on the fly' performing, that i would also approach this challenge in the same way!

I have to say that thus far it has been so uplifting for me doing this, I feel a bit of my old self returning and even wanting to go out and face an audience again, which I never imagined would happen after the last time, when I could barely hold my guitar for shaking and spent most of the evening clinging to a wall! I have become so comfortable just creating my songs at home and then putting them online, hoping by miracle that someone plays them and likes them, that I've sort of buried the fact that all those 100s of live appearances in front of real people didn't mean anything to me. A terrible thought really as to hear someone applaud your efforts is such a great feeling, and the odd whoop can bring your emotions to jelly point! So all being well I shall play once more in front of an audience and thrive off the good feelings that this should bring and give this blasted anxiety a proper poke in the eye for once!
